This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of gypsum products sold or used in the United States, categorized by their specific applications and sources, including domestic, imported, and synthetic gypsum. The data is divided into uncalcined and calcined gypsum products, reflecting their different industrial uses such as in cement production, agriculture, plaster, and prefabricated building materials. Understanding these figures is crucial for assessing the economic impact of gypsum in various sectors, tracking market trends, and guiding resource management and policy decisions in construction, agriculture, and manufacturing industries.
Analysis of the data reveals that the total quantity of gypsum products used in 2023 slightly decreased to 37,100 thousand metric tons from 37,600 thousand metric tons in 2022, while the total value increased significantly from $7.25 billion to $8.07 billion. Within uncalcined gypsum, agricultural and other uses maintained a steady quantity of 14,400 thousand metric tons but saw a notable value increase from $936 million to $1.15 billion, indicating higher market prices or increased demand for these applications. Calcined gypsum products showed a slight decline in quantity from 18,700 to 18,300 thousand metric tons, yet their value rose from $6.16 billion to $6.78 billion, driven largely by prefabricated gypsum products whose value jumped from $5.26 billion to $5.87 billion despite a small decrease in quantity. These trends highlight a growing economic importance of gypsum products, particularly in prefabricated materials, even as overall usage volumes remain relatively stable.
