U.S. Exports Of Natural And Synthetic Graphite, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Graphite

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of natural and synthetic graphite exported from the United States to various countries and localities. It distinguishes between natural graphite, which includes amorphous, crystalline flake, lump, and chip forms, and synthetic graphite, covering artificial and colloidal types as well as graphite-containing products. Tracking these exports is crucial for understanding the U.S. position in the global graphite market, a key material in industries such as battery manufacturing, lubricants, refractories, and steelmaking. The economic significance is underscored by the high value and volume of graphite exports, reflecting demand trends and supply chain dynamics that impact domestic producers and international trade relations.

Analyzing the 2023 data reveals several notable trends compared to 2022. Total graphite exports decreased from 48,200 metric tons valued at $252 million to 44,500 metric tons worth $242 million, indicating a modest contraction in export volume and value. Mexico remains the top destination by quantity and value, with exports rising from 14,400 to 18,100 metric tons and from $34.4 million to $38.9 million, respectively, highlighting growing trade ties. Conversely, exports to China declined significantly in quantity from 3,200 to 1,900 metric tons and in value from $38.7 million to $30.4 million, suggesting shifting market dynamics or demand. Synthetic graphite continues to dominate exports, accounting for the majority of both volume and value, with countries like Canada, Mexico, and Germany as leading recipients. The data also show a general decline in natural graphite exports across most countries, contributing to the overall decrease in total exports.
