U.S. Consumption Of Natural Graphite, By End Use

Home > Minerals > Graphite

This table presents detailed data on the consumption of natural graphite in the United States, segmented by end-use applications and graphite type—crystalline and amorphous. The information includes quantities measured in metric tons and corresponding values in thousands of dollars, providing insight into the economic scale and industrial demand for natural graphite across various sectors. This data is crucial for understanding market trends, guiding resource management, and informing policy decisions related to supply chain stability and industrial growth, especially given graphite's importance in manufacturing, energy storage, and other high-tech applications.

Analysis of the 2023 data reveals a notable decline in total natural graphite consumption compared to 2022, with quantities dropping from 55,400 metric tons to 43,400 metric tons and total value decreasing from $221 million to $184 million. The battery sector remains the largest consumer, accounting for 10,900 metric tons valued at $88.2 million in 2023, although this represents a decrease from 15,400 metric tons and $105 million in 2022. Other significant end uses such as brake linings and lubricants also saw reductions in both quantity and value. Conversely, the "Other" category, encompassing diverse applications like electrical devices and steelmaking, maintained substantial consumption at 14,300 metric tons valued at $62 million, indicating continued broad industrial reliance on natural graphite despite overall declines. These shifts may reflect changing market dynamics, technological advancements, or supply chain adjustments impacting graphite utilization across industries.
