Gold: World Mine Production, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Gold

This compilation presents annual gold mine production figures for various countries and localities worldwide, measured in kilograms. Such data is crucial for understanding the global supply dynamics of gold, a metal with significant economic and industrial importance. Gold serves not only as a store of value and investment asset but also plays a vital role in electronics, dentistry, and other high-tech industries. Tracking production trends helps policymakers, investors, and industry stakeholders assess market conditions, forecast supply availability, and make informed decisions related to trade, resource management, and economic planning.

Analysis of the data reveals that global gold mine production has seen a steady increase from 3.23 million kilograms in 2022 to an estimated 3.25 million kilograms in 2023. Leading producers include China, with a slight increase to approximately 375,155 kilograms in 2023, and Australia, which, despite a gradual decline from 326,304 kilograms in 2019 to an estimated 296,053 kilograms in 2023, remains a top contributor. Russia’s production remained robust at around 313,022 kilograms in 2023, while the United States experienced a gradual decrease to 170,000 kilograms. Notably, Kazakhstan showed a consistent upward trend, reaching 132,763 kilograms in 2023, and Uzbekistan increased production significantly to 119,645 kilograms. African nations such as Ghana and Zimbabwe also demonstrated strong outputs, with Ghana rebounding to 125,549 kilograms and Zimbabwe rising notably to 46,646 kilograms in 2023. Some countries like Cambodia and Nigeria showed emerging production increases, while others, including Brazil and South Africa, experienced declines. These shifts highlight evolving regional contributions and the dynamic nature of the global gold mining industry.

1Table includes data available through October 9, 2024. All data are reported unless otherwise noted; totals may include estimated data. Totals, U.S. data, and estimated data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.

2In addition to the countries and (or) localities listed, Benin, Chad, Cuba, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, North Macedonia, Pakistan, Paraguay, Portugal, and South Sudan may have produced gold (either as undocumented artisanal or byproduct production), but available information was inadequate to make reliable estimates of output.

3Does not include artisanal or byproduct production.

4Reported exports. Exported production may not reflect the totality of the country's artisanal output.

5Production is based on fiscal year, with a starting date of July 8 of the year shown.

6Does not include production from so-called people's mines, which may be as much as 20,000 kilograms per year, but includes gold recovered as byproduct of copper mining.

7Includes gold recovered from the Mouteh gold mine and from the Sarcheshmeh copper complex.

8Reported exports.

9Data may include gold from other artisanal sources.

10Production is based on fiscal year, with a starting date of April 1 of the year shown.
