Annual Average Prices

Home > Minerals > Germanium

This table presents the annual average prices of germanium metal and germanium dioxide, measured in dollars per kilogram, over a ten-year period from 2014 through 2023. These prices reflect the cost, insurance, and freight value for European markets, with purity levels increasing from 99.99% to 99.999% starting in 2018. Tracking these prices is critical for understanding market dynamics in the germanium sector, which is essential for industries such as electronics, fiber optics, and solar energy. Fluctuations in these prices can influence production costs, investment decisions, and supply chain strategies, thereby impacting the broader economy and technological development.

Analyzing the data reveals a significant decline in prices for both germanium metal and dioxide between 2014 and 2017, with germanium metal dropping from $1,918 per kilogram in 2014 to $1,082 in 2017, and germanium dioxide falling from $1,291 to $731 over the same period. This downward trend reversed starting in 2018, when prices for germanium metal rose sharply to $1,543 and germanium dioxide to $1,084, likely reflecting increased demand or supply constraints. Although prices dipped again in 2020 to $1,046 for metal and $724 for dioxide, they have steadily recovered since, reaching $1,392 and $883 respectively in 2023. These fluctuations underscore the volatility of the germanium market, influenced by purity standards, global economic conditions, and technological demand in key producing regions such as Europe.
