This table presents detailed data on the quantities and customs values of gallium arsenide wafers imported into the United States, categorized by country or locality for the years 2022 and 2023. Gallium arsenide wafers are critical components in the semiconductor industry, used extensively in high-speed electronics, optoelectronics, and microwave devices. Tracking import sources and volumes is essential for understanding supply chain dynamics, assessing market dependencies, and informing trade and industrial policy decisions that support the U.S. technology sector.
Analysis of the data reveals a significant decrease in total imports of doped gallium arsenide wafers, dropping from 422,000 kilograms valued at $200 million in 2022 to 142,000 kilograms valued at $118 million in 2023. Notably, Taiwan remained a leading supplier despite a decline from 68,400 kilograms ($103 million) to 49,600 kilograms ($53.5 million). Belgium experienced a substantial increase in quantity imported, rising from 224 kilograms to 587 kilograms, with value tripling to $1.08 million. Conversely, China’s imports fell sharply from 24,600 kilograms ($11.5 million) to 8,940 kilograms ($5 million). New entrants such as Cameroon and Vietnam appeared in 2023 with modest quantities but relatively high values, indicating potential emerging sources. For undoped wafers, imports surged dramatically from 1,940 kilograms ($16,300) in 2022 to 21,000 kilograms ($518,000) in 2023, driven largely by increased shipments from Taiwan and Singapore. These shifts highlight evolving trade patterns and the importance of diversifying supply chains for this specialized material.
