U.S. Consumption Of Gallium Content, By End Use

Home > Minerals > Gallium

This table presents detailed information on the quantities of gallium consumed in the United States, categorized by various end uses. Gallium is a critical material in the electronics industry, particularly valued for its role in optoelectronic devices and integrated circuits. Tracking consumption by end use provides insight into industrial demand patterns, technological trends, and potential supply chain vulnerabilities. This data is essential for policymakers, manufacturers, and investors to understand the economic significance of gallium and to support strategic planning in sectors reliant on advanced semiconductor and photonic technologies.

Analysis of the data reveals that total gallium consumption in the U.S. slightly decreased from 19,700 kilograms in 2022 to 19,200 kilograms in 2023. The most substantial change occurred in the use of gallium for laser diodes and light-emitting diodes, which declined by approximately 25%, from 4,060 kilograms to 3,050 kilograms. In contrast, consumption for photodetectors and solar cells remained nearly constant, with a marginal increase from 786 to 789 kilograms. Analog integrated circuits saw a moderate rise in gallium use, increasing from 13,800 to 14,300 kilograms, while digital integrated circuits also experienced a slight uptick from 821 to 863 kilograms. Research and development consumption decreased from 263 to 194 kilograms, indicating a possible shift in focus or resource allocation. These trends highlight a dynamic landscape in gallium applications, with integrated circuits maintaining strong demand despite fluctuations in optoelectronic device usage.
