This table presents detailed annual data on the quantities of industrial explosives and blasting agents sold for consumption in the United States, measured in metric tons. It categorizes the explosives into permissibles, other high explosives, and blasting agents and oxidizers, providing a comprehensive overview of the market supply over a five-year period from 2018 to 2022. This information is critical for understanding trends in industries reliant on these materials, such as mining, construction, and quarrying, as well as for assessing economic activity, regulatory impacts, and safety considerations within the explosives sector.
Analysis of the data reveals notable fluctuations across the categories over the five years. The total quantity sold peaked at 1,770,000 metric tons in 2018 before experiencing a general decline to 1,460,000 metric tons in 2022. Blasting agents and oxidizers consistently represent the largest share, with sales dropping from 1,720,000 metric tons in 2018 to 1,420,000 metric tons in 2022, reflecting a downward trend possibly linked to shifts in industrial demand or regulatory changes. Other high explosives also decreased from 46,400 metric tons in 2018 to 33,900 metric tons in 2022, with a notable dip in 2021. Permissibles showed more volatility, with a sharp increase to 598 metric tons in 2021 followed by a significant decline to 214 metric tons in 2022. These trends highlight the dynamic nature of the explosives market and underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring to inform industry stakeholders and policymakers.
