This table presents detailed data on the quantity and value of dimension limestone sold or used by producers in the United States, categorized by specific end uses. Dimension limestone, a key building material, is utilized in various forms such as rough blocks, irregular-shaped stone, and dressed stone products including ashlar, slabs, flagging, and veneer. Understanding the distribution of limestone by use is essential for assessing trends in the construction and architectural sectors, as well as for economic planning and resource management. The data highlights the economic significance of dimension limestone as a versatile natural resource that supports infrastructure development, commercial building projects, and ornamental applications.
Analysis of the data reveals that total dimension limestone production increased modestly from 1,120,000 metric tons in 2021 to 1,170,000 metric tons in 2022, with a corresponding rise in value from $190 million to $197 million. Notably, ashlar and partially squared pieces saw a substantial increase in quantity from 266,000 to 283,000 metric tons and a significant value jump from $36.4 million to $45.9 million, indicating growing demand for higher-quality dressed stone. Panels and veneer experienced the most pronounced growth, with quantity nearly doubling from 24,100 to 43,000 metric tons and value more than tripling from $3.46 million to $12.2 million, reflecting expanding use in architectural finishes. Conversely, rough blocks for building and construction showed a slight decline in quantity and value, suggesting a shift in market preferences. These trends underscore evolving industry dynamics favoring finished limestone products with aesthetic and functional appeal.
