This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of dimension stone sold or used by producers in the United States, categorized by specific end uses. Dimension stone, which includes natural rock materials cut and finished for construction and architectural purposes, plays a vital role in various sectors such as building, monumental works, and landscaping. Tracking these figures is important for understanding trends in the construction and decorative stone markets, assessing economic contributions of the dimension stone industry, and informing resource management and policy decisions.
Analysis of the 2022 data reveals a modest increase in total quantity sold or used, rising from 2,290,000 metric tons in 2021 to 2,380,000 metric tons, while total value saw a slight uptick from $413 million to $421 million. Notably, irregular-shaped rough stone increased by approximately 36,000 metric tons to 390,000 metric tons, with its value rising from $41 million to $47.2 million, indicating growing demand in this category. Ashlars and partially squared pieces also showed growth, with quantity increasing from 434,000 to 457,000 metric tons and value climbing from $69 million to $77.4 million. Conversely, rough blocks for building and construction experienced a slight decline in quantity from 829,000 to 824,000 metric tons and a more pronounced value decrease from $148 million to $131 million. Among dressed stone uses, panels and veneer saw a significant value increase from $16.2 million to $30.8 million alongside a quantity rise, suggesting heightened market interest. These shifts highlight evolving preferences within the dimension stone market, with certain specialized uses gaining prominence amid overall stable production levels.
