This table presents detailed information on the quantities and values of various types of dimension stone sold or used by producers in the United States. Dimension stone, which includes materials such as granite, limestone, marble, sandstone, and slate, plays a crucial role in construction, architecture, and landscaping industries. Tracking these figures helps to assess the health and trends of the domestic stone industry, informs economic planning, and supports resource management decisions. The data also reflect market demand and supply dynamics, influencing employment and investment in mining and quarrying sectors.
Analysis of the 2021 and 2022 data reveals several noteworthy trends. Overall, the total quantity of dimension stone sold or used increased from 2.29 million metric tons in 2021 to 2.38 million metric tons in 2022, with a corresponding rise in value from $413 million to $421 million. Limestone remains the dominant stone type by volume, growing from 1.12 million to 1.17 million metric tons and increasing in value from $190 million to $197 million. Granite production also rose significantly by 10%, from 445,000 to 491,000 metric tons, although its value slightly declined from $108 million to $102 million. Marble showed a slight decrease in quantity but a substantial value increase from $19.5 million to $23 million, indicating higher prices or quality. Conversely, sandstone and slate experienced declines in both quantity and value, with slate dropping notably from 35,000 to 25,500 metric tons and value falling from $15.3 million to $14 million. Miscellaneous stone types increased in both quantity and value, suggesting diversification in stone usage. These shifts highlight evolving market preferences and production adjustments within the U.S. dimension stone industry.
