This table presents key statistics on the production, trade, and consumption of dimension stone in the United States, measured in thousand metric tons and thousand dollars. It includes data on quantities sold or used by domestic producers, the value of these sales, exports, imports for consumption, and apparent consumption values. This information is crucial for understanding the economic impact and industrial dynamics of the U.S. dimension stone sector, which supplies materials for construction, architectural, and decorative applications. Tracking these metrics helps policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts assess market trends, trade balances, and the competitiveness of domestic producers in a global context.
Analysis of the data from 2018 through 2022 reveals several notable trends. The quantity of dimension stone sold or used by U.S. producers declined from 2,660 thousand metric tons in 2018 to a low of 2,120 thousand metric tons in 2020, likely reflecting pandemic-related disruptions, before recovering to 2,380 thousand metric tons in 2022. Correspondingly, the value of domestic production decreased from $437 million in 2018 to $397 million in 2020, then rose to $421 million by 2022. Exports showed a downward trend from $69.5 million in 2018 to $46.9 million in 2020 and 2021, with a slight increase to $48.4 million in 2022. Meanwhile, imports for consumption increased steadily, reaching $2.32 billion in 2022, up from $2.09 billion in 2018, indicating a growing reliance on foreign dimension stone. Apparent consumption, which accounts for domestic production plus imports minus exports, rose from $2.46 billion in 2018 to $2.69 billion in 2022, underscoring sustained demand in the U.S. market despite fluctuations in domestic output.
