This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of construction sand and gravel imported into the United States from various countries for consumption. This information is critical for understanding the supply dynamics of these essential raw materials, which are fundamental to the construction industry. Tracking imports helps assess the reliance on foreign sources, monitor market trends, and inform policy decisions related to trade, infrastructure development, and resource management.
In 2023, total U.S. imports of construction sand and gravel increased notably to 4.73 million metric tons, up from 3.82 million metric tons in 2022, representing a significant rise in supply from abroad. The total value of these imports also grew substantially, reaching $145 million compared to $101 million the previous year. Canada remained the dominant supplier, with imports rising from 3.56 million metric tons valued at $66.6 million in 2022 to 4.17 million metric tons worth $110 million in 2023. Other countries showing marked increases include Mexico, whose exports to the U.S. surged from 69,000 to 295,000 metric tons, and Jamaica, which more than tripled its shipments from 34,000 to 118,000 metric tons. Conversely, some suppliers such as the Dominican Republic and New Zealand experienced declines in both quantity and value. The unit value per metric ton also increased overall, from $26.35 to $30.72, indicating rising costs or shifts in the quality or type of material imported.
