Construction Sand And Gravel Operations In The United States In 2022, By State

Home > Minerals > Sand and Gravel, Construction

This table provides a detailed overview of construction sand and gravel operations across the United States in 2022, broken down by state. It includes data on the number of active operations, pits, dredging operations, and various types of processing plants such as stationary, portable, and combined facilities, as well as sales yards. This information is critical for understanding the scale and distribution of these essential mineral resources, which are fundamental to the construction industry. Sand and gravel serve as key raw materials for concrete, asphalt, and road base, making their availability and production capacity vital indicators of economic activity and infrastructure development.

In 2022, there were a total of 5,539 active operations, including 5,497 virgin operations and 42 recycling plants, with 6,324 active pits and 479 dredging operations nationwide. Minnesota led the nation with the highest number of active operations at 379 and also had the largest number of active pits at 494, reflecting its significant role in aggregate production. Michigan and Wisconsin followed closely, with 315 and 300 active operations respectively. Notably, California had the highest number of dredging operations at 22, indicating its reliance on both land-based and water-based extraction methods. The distribution of processing plants showed a balance between stationary (2,396) and portable (2,247) facilities, with 339 plants classified as both stationary and portable. States like Texas and New York also demonstrated substantial processing capacity, with Texas hosting 178 stationary and 73 portable plants, and New York having 119 stationary and 135 portable plants. These figures highlight regional variations in production methods and infrastructure, underscoring the diverse approaches to aggregate processing across the country.
