Construction Sand And Gravel Production In The United States, By Size Of Operation

Home > Minerals > Sand and Gravel, Construction

This table presents detailed data on the production of construction sand and gravel in the United States, categorized by the size of mining operations measured in metric tons. It highlights the number of operations within each size range, their share of total operations, and the corresponding production quantities and percentages of total output for the years 2022 and 2023. This information is crucial for understanding the distribution of production capacity across different operation sizes, which impacts supply chain dynamics, resource management, and economic planning within the construction materials industry. The data also aids policymakers and industry stakeholders in identifying trends and shifts in production that may affect infrastructure development and market stability.

Analysis of the data reveals a slight decrease in the total number of operations from 5,741 in 2022 to 5,497 in 2023, while total production marginally increased from 959 million metric tons to 967 million metric tons. Notably, operations producing between 100,000 to 199,999 metric tons grew both in number—from 907 to 945—and production volume, rising from 117 million to 123 million metric tons, increasing their share of total production from 12.2% to 12.7%. Conversely, smaller operations under 25,000 metric tons decreased in both number and output, dropping from 1,570 to 1,453 operations and from 14 million to 12.4 million metric tons, reducing their production share to 1.3%. Larger operations producing 1.5 million metric tons or more also expanded, with the number of operations increasing from 55 to 65 and production rising from 107 million to 129 million metric tons, boosting their share to 13.3%. These trends suggest a consolidation toward larger-scale operations contributing a growing proportion of total output, reflecting possible efficiencies or market demands favoring higher volume producers.
