This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of construction sand and gravel sold or used by producers across the United States, broken down by state for the years 2022 and 2023. This information is critical for understanding the supply dynamics of these essential raw materials, which are fundamental to the construction industry, infrastructure development, and various manufacturing processes. Tracking production and value trends helps policymakers, industry stakeholders, and economists assess market health, regional demand, and resource management, ultimately supporting informed decision-making in economic planning and environmental stewardship.
Analysis of the data reveals that total production of construction sand and gravel in the U.S. slightly increased from 959 million metric tons in 2022 to 967 million metric tons in 2023, while the total value rose more substantially from $10.9 billion to $12.1 billion. This reflects an overall increase in the average unit value from $11.35 to $12.54 per metric ton, indicating higher prices or shifts toward higher-value products. Notably, states with large construction markets such as California and Texas maintained their positions as top producers, with California producing 99.3 million metric tons valued at $1.63 billion in 2023 and Texas producing 103 million metric tons valued at $1.46 billion. Some states showed significant growth in both quantity and value; for example, Louisiana’s production increased from 15.2 to 16.6 million metric tons, with value rising from $180 million to $218 million. Hawaii, despite its smaller scale, exhibited a remarkable unit value increase to $32.80 per metric ton in 2023, the highest among all states, reflecting unique market conditions. Overall, the data indicates steady demand and rising prices for construction sand and gravel, underscoring its continued importance in the U.S. economy.
