U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Clinker, By Country

Home > Minerals > Cement

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of clinker imported into the United States from various countries and localities. Clinker, a key intermediate product in cement manufacturing, is essential for the construction industry and infrastructure development. Tracking import volumes and their associated customs and c.i.f. (cost, insurance, and freight) values provides insight into supply chain dynamics, trade dependencies, and economic factors influencing the domestic cement market. This information is crucial for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts monitoring trends in raw material sourcing and the health of the construction sector.

In 2023, total U.S. imports of clinker decreased to 1,082 thousand metric tons from 1,220 thousand metric tons in 2022, representing a decline of about 11%. Correspondingly, the total c.i.f. value fell from $102 million to approximately $85 million. Algeria emerged as a new significant supplier with 160 thousand metric tons imported in 2023, up from no recorded imports the previous year, contributing over $11 million in c.i.f. value. Conversely, imports from Canada, traditionally the largest source, declined from 598 to 510 thousand metric tons, with a notable drop in customs value from $46.8 million to $39.8 million. Turkey also saw a sharp reduction in quantity imported, from 369 to 193 thousand metric tons, and a halving of customs value to $18.2 million. Smaller suppliers such as Vietnam and Tunisia showed modest increases or stable figures, while Saudi Arabia ceased clinker exports to the U.S. mainland but maintained some shipments to Puerto Rico. Overall, these shifts reflect changing trade patterns and supplier dynamics in the U.S. clinker import market.

1Table includes data available through November 15, 2024. Data are unrounded but are thought to be accurate to no more than three significant digits. For all types of hydraulic cement.

2Customs value. The price actually paid or payable for merchandise when sold for exportation to the United States, excluding U.S. import duties, freight, insurance, and other charges incurred in bringing the merchandise to the United States.

3Cost, insurance, and freight (c.i.f.). The value represents the customs value plus insurance, freight, and other delivery charges to the first port of entry, but excludes costs of offloading, other U.S. port handling charges, and demurrage.

4Data are underreported with respect to additional material coming in as “informal entries.”

5Less than ½ unit.

6Data may not add to totals shown because of independent rounding.
