U.S. Imports For Consumption Of White Cement, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Cement

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of white cement imported into the United States from various countries and localities for consumption. It includes both the customs value and the cost, insurance, and freight (c.i.f.) value, providing insight into the economic scale and trade dynamics of this specialized construction material. Monitoring these imports is crucial for understanding supply chain dependencies, price trends, and the competitive landscape of the U.S. white cement market, which is important for industries such as construction, architecture, and infrastructure development where white cement is preferred for its aesthetic and performance qualities.

In 2023, U.S. imports of white cement increased significantly compared to 2022, with total quantities rising from 1,874 thousand metric tons to 2,495 thousand metric tons, and the c.i.f. value climbing from approximately $222.6 million to $283.0 million. Turkey remained the dominant supplier, increasing its shipments from 1,128 thousand metric tons valued at $110.5 million c.i.f. in 2022 to 1,643 thousand metric tons valued at $147.5 million in 2023. Canada and Egypt also showed notable growth; Canadian imports rose modestly from 300 to 314 thousand metric tons with a substantial value increase to $53.8 million, while Egyptian imports grew from 163 to 215 thousand metric tons, with c.i.f. value reaching $25.5 million. Conversely, Mexico experienced a slight decline in quantity from 238 to 210 thousand metric tons, accompanied by a decrease in value. New entrants such as Algeria and Greece appeared in 2023 with measurable imports, indicating diversification in sourcing. Overall, the data reflect a robust expansion in white cement imports, driven primarily by increased demand and Turkey’s strengthened market position.

1Table includes data available through November 15, 2024. Data are unrounded but are thought to be accurate to no more than three significant digits.

2The price actually paid or payable for merchandise when sold for exportation to the United States, excluding U.S. import duties, freight, insurance, and other charges incurred in bringing the merchandise to the United States.

3Cost, insurance, and freight (c.i.f.). The value represents the customs value plus insurance, freight, and other delivery charges to the first port of entry, but excludes costs of offloading, other U.S. port handling charges, and demurrage.

4Values of less than $125.00 (c.i.f.) per metric ton likely indicate the mistaken total or partial inclusion of data for gray portland or similar cement or clinker. This error happens when the importer records the wrong tariff number with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Values that exceed $250 per ton likely indicate misidentified specialty cement, not white cement.

5Less than ½ unit.

6Data may not add to totals shown because of independent rounding.
