U.S. Foreign Trade Of Beryllium Materials, By Type

Home > Minerals > Beryllium

This table presents detailed data on the United States' foreign trade of beryllium materials, categorized by type, including exports and imports for consumption. It provides figures on gross weight, estimated beryllium content, and value for each material type, along with principal trading partners by gross weight. This information is crucial for understanding the supply chain dynamics and economic significance of beryllium, a critical metal used in aerospace, defense, electronics, and other high-technology industries. Tracking trade flows helps policymakers and industry stakeholders monitor market trends, assess supply risks, and make informed decisions regarding resource management and trade policies.

Analysis of the data reveals significant growth in exports of unwrought beryllium, which surged from 5,700 kilograms in 2021 to 26,500 kilograms in 2022, with value increasing from $243,000 to $1.08 million. Germany, France, and Mexico were the top export destinations for this material. Notably, beryllium waste and scrap exports appeared for the first time in 2022 at 13,500 kilograms, almost entirely destined for Canada. Other beryllium exports also increased slightly in gross weight and value. Total exports more than doubled in gross weight from 30,400 to 60,600 kilograms but decreased in value from $26.8 million to $25.2 million, indicating possible price fluctuations or product mix changes. On the import side, total gross weight rose from 477,000 to 637,000 kilograms, while beryllium content decreased from 48,800 to 39,100 kilograms, and value increased from $14.7 million to $19.9 million. Imports of beryllium-copper plates, sheets, and strip showed the largest increase, rising from 366,000 to 528,000 kilograms, with Japan supplying 98% of this category. Kazakhstan remained the dominant source for beryllium-copper master alloy imports, accounting for 90%. These trends highlight evolving trade patterns and the importance of key international partners in the U.S. beryllium supply chain.
