This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of U.S. exports and reexports of unmanufactured asbestos fibers and various asbestos-based products, categorized by product type. This information is critical for understanding the scale and economic impact of asbestos-related trade, which remains relevant despite the cessation of asbestos production in the United States since 2002. The data helps track international demand, regulatory compliance, and the flow of asbestos-containing materials, which are subject to strict health and safety regulations due to their hazardous nature.
Analysis of the data reveals a notable increase in total export quantities from 1,610 metric tons in 2022 to 2,190 metric tons in 2023, accompanied by a modest rise in total value from $12.3 million to $12.6 million. Manufactured asbestos clothing exports showed a significant growth, rising from 1,360 metric tons valued at $4.03 million in 2022 to 2,030 metric tons worth $5.53 million in 2023. Conversely, unmanufactured asbestos fiber exports decreased sharply from 152 metric tons ($99,000) to 38 metric tons ($41,000). Other product categories such as gaskets, packing, and seals also experienced increased quantities and values, with exports rising from 9 to 16 metric tons and values from $839,000 to $1.2 million. Meanwhile, friction products saw a slight decline in value from $4.56 million to $4.09 million, although quantity data was not available. These trends suggest shifting patterns in the types of asbestos-based products traded internationally, likely influenced by regulatory, industrial, and market factors.

Includes data available through March 18, 2024. Data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.
Data are shown as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau without modification.
For manufactured products, the quantity represents the gross weight; asbestos contents are unknown.
Free alongside ship value.
Likely consists of materials misclassified as asbestos, reexports, and (or) waste products because asbestos has not been produced in the United States since 2002.
Little to no manufacturing of asbestos products has taken place in the United States for many years. Reported exports may have been reexports and (or) exports of products that were similar to but did not contain asbestos.
Excludes crocidolite-based products.
Articles were likely misclassified. Crocidolite has not been significantly produced or used in the 21st century.
