This table provides a detailed overview of the stocks, receipts, and consumption of both new and old aluminum scrap by various classes of consumers in the United States for the year 2022. It breaks down the data by specific types of scrap such as extrusions, can stock clippings, castings, and dross and skimmings, among others, and distinguishes between secondary smelters and integrated aluminum companies. This information is crucial for understanding the flow and utilization of aluminum scrap within the industry, which impacts raw material availability, recycling efficiency, and overall aluminum production costs. Tracking these metrics helps stakeholders gauge market trends, optimize supply chains, and support sustainable resource management in the aluminum sector.
In 2022, the grand total of all aluminum scrap consumed in the U.S. reached approximately 3.55 million metric tons, with new scrap accounting for about 2.08 million metric tons and old scrap about 1.47 million metric tons. Secondary smelters consumed nearly 1.98 million metric tons, while integrated aluminum companies consumed around 1.56 million metric tons. Notably, dross and skimmings represented the largest single category of new scrap consumption at 538,000 metric tons for secondary smelters, maintaining a stable stock level of about 18,300 metric tons at both the beginning and end of the year. Aluminum cans were a significant component of old scrap, with integrated companies receiving 536,000 metric tons and consuming 534,000 metric tons, highlighting the importance of beverage can recycling. Stocks generally remained stable or showed slight increases, such as the rise in secondary smelters’ total stocks from 55,900 metric tons at the start of the year to 96,800 metric tons by year-end, indicating a buildup of inventory that may reflect market dynamics or supply chain adjustments.
