Aluminum, Primary: World Production, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Aluminum

This table presents data on the global production of primary aluminum, detailing output volumes by country or locality over a five-year period from 2018 through 2022. Primary aluminum production is a critical indicator of industrial capacity and economic activity, as aluminum is widely used in sectors such as transportation, construction, packaging, and electrical engineering. Tracking production trends helps stakeholders understand shifts in supply dynamics, assess market competitiveness, and anticipate changes in global trade flows, which can influence pricing and investment decisions in the aluminum industry.

Analysis of the data reveals that China remains the dominant producer, increasing its output from 35.8 million metric tons in 2018 to an estimated 40.2 million metric tons in 2022, reflecting a steady upward trend despite global economic fluctuations. India also showed notable growth, with production rising from 3.7 million metric tons in 2018 to an estimated 4.1 million metric tons in 2022. Bahrain and Malaysia experienced consistent increases as well, with Bahrain reaching 1.6 million metric tons and Malaysia 900 thousand metric tons in 2022. Conversely, some countries such as Argentina and Canada saw declines in recent years; Argentina’s production dropped to an estimated 410 thousand metric tons in 2022 after a low of 287 thousand metric tons in 2021, while Canada decreased from 3.1 million metric tons in 2021 to 2.8 million metric tons in 2022. The total world production of primary aluminum rose from 63.3 million metric tons in 2018 to an estimated 68.4 million metric tons in 2022, indicating overall growth in global aluminum manufacturing capacity.

1Table includes data available through June 5, 2023. All data are reported unless otherwise noted, totals may include estimated data. Totals and estimated data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.

2Primary aluminum is defined as "The weight of liquid aluminum as tapped from pots, excluding the weight of any alloying materials as well as that of any metal produced from either returned scrap of remelted material." International reporting practices vary from country to country, some nations conforming to the foregoing definition and others using different definitions. For those countries for which a different definition is given specifically in the source publication, the definition is provided in a footnote.

3Primary ingot plus secondary ingot.

4Primary unalloyed metal plus primary alloyed metal, thus including weight of alloying material.
