This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of calcined bauxite exported from and imported into the United States, categorized by country or locality and further divided into refractory and other grades. This information is critical for understanding the trade dynamics of calcined bauxite, a key industrial mineral used primarily in refractory materials for high-temperature applications such as steelmaking and foundry operations. Tracking these trade flows helps policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts assess supply chain dependencies, market trends, and economic impacts related to this essential raw material.
Analysis of the data reveals that U.S. exports of refractory grade calcined bauxite decreased from 6 thousand metric tons valued at $2.9 million in 2021 to 4 thousand metric tons valued at $2.38 million in 2022, with Mexico remaining the top export destination, maintaining a steady quantity of 3 thousand metric tons but with a slight decrease in value from $1.87 million to $1.72 million. Exports to Canada showed a small increase in refractory grade quantity from less than half a unit to 1 thousand metric ton, with value rising from $90,000 to $317,000. On the import side, total refractory grade imports declined from 139 thousand metric tons valued at $51.6 million in 2021 to 108 thousand metric tons valued at $36.3 million in 2022. China, the largest supplier, saw its imports drop from 79 to 39 thousand metric tons, with a corresponding value decrease from $35.7 million to $19.5 million. Conversely, imports of other grade calcined bauxite increased from 316 to 371 thousand metric tons, with value rising from $32.8 million to $44.5 million, driven largely by Guyana, which supplied 137 thousand metric tons valued at $26.7 million in 2022, up from 142 thousand metric tons valued at $21.2 million in 2021. These shifts highlight evolving trade patterns and the importance of diverse sourcing for U.S. industry needs.
