Average Value Of U.S. Imports Of Alumina

Home > Minerals > Alumina

This table presents the monthly average value, expressed in dollars per metric ton, of alumina imported into the United States. Alumina, a key intermediate product derived from bauxite, is essential for producing aluminum metal and various industrial applications such as refractories and abrasives. Tracking the average import value provides insight into market trends, supply chain dynamics, and cost fluctuations that can impact domestic manufacturing and pricing strategies within the aluminum industry and related sectors.

Analysis of the data reveals that the weighted average value of alumina imports increased from $462 per metric ton in 2021 to $518 per metric ton in 2022, indicating an overall rise in import costs. Notably, several months in 2022, such as May and September, saw significant spikes to $655 and $711 per metric ton respectively, compared to $465 and $419 in the same months of 2021. Conversely, August 2022 experienced a decline to $488 from $633 the previous year, and the last quarter of 2022 showed a downward trend with values dropping below $500 per metric ton. These fluctuations suggest volatility likely influenced by global supply chain disruptions, changes in demand, or shifts in international market conditions during the period.
