Ammonia: World Production, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Nitrogen

This table presents annual global ammonia production figures by country or locality, measured in thousand metric tons of nitrogen content. Ammonia is a critical industrial chemical primarily used in fertilizer manufacturing, which supports global agriculture and food production. Tracking production levels helps assess supply dynamics, economic health of the chemical sector, and potential impacts on related industries such as agriculture and energy. The data also provides insight into regional production capacities, technological advancements, and geopolitical factors influencing the global ammonia market.

Analysis of the data from 2019 to 2023 reveals several notable trends and shifts. China remains the dominant producer, increasing output from 38,922 thousand metric tons in 2019 to an estimated 47,000 thousand metric tons in 2023, reflecting steady growth. India also shows a significant rise, from 12,200 thousand metric tons in 2019 to 15,300 thousand metric tons in 2023, indicating expanding production capacity. The United States maintained relatively stable production around 13,800 thousand metric tons in 2022 and 2023 after a dip in 2021. Some countries experienced volatility; for example, Ukraine’s production dropped sharply from 2,304 thousand metric tons in 2020 to 840 thousand metric tons in 2023, likely due to geopolitical disruptions. Nigeria’s output surged from 700 thousand metric tons in 2019 to 1,700 thousand metric tons in 2023, showing rapid growth. Overall, world ammonia production increased from 145,000 thousand metric tons in 2019 to an estimated 152,000 thousand metric tons in 2023, underscoring a gradual global expansion in ammonia manufacturing.
