U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Copper Scrap, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Copper

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of copper scrap imported into the United States from various countries and localities, distinguishing between unalloyed copper scrap and copper-alloy scrap. This information is crucial for understanding the supply chain dynamics of the U.S. copper recycling industry, which plays a significant role in supporting domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on primary copper production. Tracking these imports helps policymakers and industry stakeholders monitor trade flows, assess market trends, and make informed decisions regarding resource management and economic planning.

In 2021, total imports for consumption of unalloyed copper scrap reached 37,700 metric tons valued at $196 million, while copper-alloy scrap imports totaled 105,000 metric tons with an estimated copper content of 75,300 metric tons and a value of $629 million. Compared to 2020, unalloyed scrap imports increased by approximately 36% in quantity (from 27,600 metric tons) and 61% in value (from $122 million), indicating a strong growth in demand or supply availability. Canada and Mexico were the leading suppliers, with Canada providing 19,900 metric tons of unalloyed scrap valued at $109 million and 48,200 metric tons of copper-alloy scrap valued at $332 million, while Mexico supplied 12,600 metric tons of unalloyed scrap worth $57.9 million and 43,800 metric tons of copper-alloy scrap valued at $229 million. Notably, smaller countries such as the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica also contributed significant quantities, reflecting a diverse import base. These trends underscore the importance of international trade partnerships in meeting the U.S. demand for recycled copper materials.
