U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Hydraulic Cement And Clinker, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Cement

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of hydraulic cement and clinker imported into the United States from various countries and localities. It includes figures for both the quantity in thousand metric tons and the associated customs and cost, insurance, and freight (c.i.f.) values in thousand dollars for the years 2022 and 2023. This information is critical for understanding the supply dynamics of essential construction materials that support infrastructure development and the broader economy. Tracking imports helps identify shifts in trade patterns, assess reliance on foreign sources, and evaluate the economic impact on domestic producers and consumers.

Analysis of the data reveals that total U.S. imports for consumption slightly decreased from 26,006 thousand metric tons in 2022 to 25,907 thousand metric tons in 2023, while the total c.i.f. value increased marginally from approximately $2.63 billion to $2.65 billion. Turkey remains the largest supplier by quantity, though its imports declined from 9,623 thousand metric tons in 2022 to 7,874 thousand metric tons in 2023, with a corresponding decrease in customs value from about $666 million to $579 million. Conversely, Algeria showed a significant increase in imports, rising from 173 thousand metric tons to 741 thousand metric tons, and its c.i.f. value surged from roughly $18.3 million to $71.5 million. Vietnam also experienced notable growth, with imports increasing from 2,476 to 3,931 thousand metric tons and c.i.f. value climbing from $293 million to $357 million. Canada continues to be a major source, maintaining high import quantities near 4,900 thousand metric tons, with an increase in c.i.f. value from $515 million to $569 million. These trends highlight evolving trade relationships and the shifting landscape of global cement supply to the U.S. market.

1Table includes data available through November 15, 2024. Data are unrounded but are thought to be accurate to no more than three significant digits. Includes portland, masonry, and other hydraulic cements.

2Customs value. The price actually paid or payable for merchandise when sold for exportation to the United States, excluding U.S. import duties, freight, insurance, and other charges incurred in bringing the merchandise to the United States.

3Cost, insurance, and freight (c.i.f.). The value represents the customs value plus insurance, freight, and other delivery charges to the first port of entry, but excludes costs of offloading, other U.S. port handling charges, and demurrage.

4Data are underreported with respect to clinker from Canada, and cement from Mexico, owing to additional material coming in as “informal entries.”

5Less than ½ unit.

6Malta has no cement plants; material is believed to be from Turkey.

7Data may not add to totals shown because of independent rounding.
