Cadmium: World Refinery Production, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Cadmium

The table presents detailed data on global cadmium refinery production by country or locality over a five-year period from 2018 through 2022. This information is crucial for understanding the supply dynamics of cadmium, a metal widely used in batteries, pigments, coatings, and stabilizers in plastics. Tracking production by country helps identify key players in the cadmium market, assess trends in output, and evaluate potential impacts on global supply chains and pricing. Given cadmium’s industrial importance and its role in emerging technologies such as rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, monitoring refinery production supports economic planning and resource management.

Analysis of the data reveals that China remains the dominant producer, consistently refining approximately 8,700 metric tons annually from 2020 through 2022, despite a notable decline from 10,349 metric tons in 2018. South Korea follows as the second-largest producer, maintaining steady output around 4,000 metric tons in recent years, down from 4,905 metric tons in 2018. Canada and Japan have stable production levels near 1,800 metric tons each in the latest years reported. Mexico showed a significant upward trend, increasing production from 952 metric tons in 2019 to 1,174 metric tons in 2022. Conversely, Kazakhstan’s output declined from an estimated 1,500 metric tons in 2018 and 2019 to 1,000 metric tons in 2022. The United States experienced growth from 73 metric tons in 2018 to a peak of 241 metric tons in 2021 before slightly decreasing to 212 metric tons in 2022. Overall, global refinery production decreased from a revised total of 26,700 metric tons in 2018 to an estimated 22,600 metric tons in 2022, reflecting shifts in production capacity and market conditions across key producing countries.

1Table includes data available through June 13, 2023. All data are reported unless otherwise noted; totals may include estimated data. Totals and estimated data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.

2This table gives unwrought production from ores, concentrates, flue dusts, and other materials of both domestic and imported origin. Sources generally do not indicate if secondary metal (recovered from scrap) is included or not; where known, this has been indicated by a footnote.

3In addition to the countries and (or) localities listed, Algeria, India, North Korea, and Turkey may have produced cadmium, but available information was inadequate to make reliable estimates of output.

4Prior to 2020, reported quantities and subsequent estimates based on reported quantities may include, in addition to cadmium metal, cadmium products including cadmium zinc alloys. Beginning in 2020, the cadmium producer in Kazakhstan published an approximate quantity of produced metal.
