Forastero Cocoa Bean

The Forastero cocoa bean is possibly native to the Amazon Basin. It grows in several South American countries, including Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela, as well as in Africa and South-East Asia.

The Forastero cocoa bean is the most widely grown variety, accounting for about 70-80% of total cocoa world production, but its quality is not as highly regarded as the Criollo variety. Its characteristics include: very or extremely bitter, very aromatic, very astringent and high in tannin.
